POSITION SUMMARY

The risk manager manages the organization-wide risk management processes, patient safety programs, and provides guidance to staff. The risk manager develops and maintains systems within the organization to detect, monitor, prevent, organize, measure, investigate, report, and manage patient adverse events, malpractice claims, incident reports, and other indicators of potential patient and employee harm. The organization's key aims are to minimize risk throughout the clinic by improving health outcomes and service, increasing patient safety, and reducing error in healthcare processes.

POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Organized, persistent, and creative individual with strong communications, interpersonal, and systems thinking skills.
  • Proven management ability and experience including a thorough understanding of quality improvement processes, tools, and techniques; root cause analysis and preventive risk management strategies; accrediting bodies' standards; and state and federal regulations.
  • Experience with standard Microsoft Office or related products required and experience in database management and systems development desired.
  • Knowledge of risk information management systems (RIMS).
  • Ability to function effectively, independently, and efficiently in a stressful and dynamic work environment.

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Nursing or another clinical healthcare field is required; Master's degree in a related field, broad healthcare knowledge, and risk management certification are highly desirable.

  • Ability to effectively analyze factors concerning risk, liability, safety and occupational hazards.
  • Demonstrated successful supervisory experience of 3-5 years required.
  • Must demonstrate effective identification and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Excellent experience and skills in the use PC and Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies/organizations and the public.
  • Must project professionalism coupled with strong leadership qualities.

Residency and Transportation Requirement:

Must possess a valid driver's license and automobile with insurance coverage as required by the State of Missouri.

License(s)/Certification(s) Preferred: Risk management certification, ARM, CPHRM, or FASHRM is a plus.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

The risk manager is responsible for promoting the development and implementation of the facility risk management program including the following:

  1. Proactively evaluate areas of organizational risk based on internal assessment and external benchmarking and implement strategies and policies that promote patient and staff safety.
  2. Promote the occurrence reporting process including trending and reporting of results, identification of problem-prone areas, and facilitation of prevention initiatives.
  3. Direct the investigation of all potentially compensable events (preventable adverse events).
  4. Lead the review of serious occurrences requiring root-cause analysis or failure mode and effects analysis. Disseminate lessons learned and process improvement plans.
  5. Meet regularly with leadership to provide detailed reports on all serious incidents, claims, and risk-related issues.
  6. Respond to sentinel events and other serious occurrences and provide expert advice on the management and reporting of such events to clinical leadership and staff.
  7. Conduct immediate/appropriate response to any serious occurrence/complaint representing actual or potential patient, visitor, or employee injury. Monitor and take subsequent actions to ensure learning, compliance, and documentation
  8. Analyze all statistical reports and advisories that identify risk management and patient safety patterns and trends for leadership.
  9. Ensure maximum protection from discovery of all claims/potential claims materials. Coordinate claims investigation and legal defense processes.
  10. Serve as liaison to external regulatory agencies for purposes of patient and physician reporting, event investigation, and response.
  11. Keep up to date with new and revised state and federal regulations and statutes related to hospitals and patient care. Review and evaluate related policies and procedures and recommend revisions as needed. Create new policies for approval, as needed.
  12. Collaborates with clinical staff and management for prevention of risks throughout the facility that support a culture of safety.
  13. Serve as a resource and consultant for patient safety, process improvement, policy and procedure development and compliance initiatives.
  14. Assures compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards and ensures they are continually.
  15. Facilitate responses to annual auditor requests
  16. Provide monthly safety data reports
  17. Actively participate in a variety of committees as assigned.
