Communications Director

POSITION TITLE: Director of Communications

REPORTS TO: President and CEO

STATUS / HOURS: Regular/Full-time (Evenings and Weekends as scheduled)


POSITION SUMMARY: Perform the duties to develop and implement a strategic, multi-faceted communications plan designed to build and strengthen the organization's image and role in the community. Devise program guidelines and policies, oversee implementation processes, and provide quality control for internal and external communications programs, media activities, special events, and certain communications pertinent to the governing body and institutional recordkeeping. Maintain the organization's website, support the Affinia Healthcare Foundation where needed, and develop print and electronic materials.


POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education: Requires Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or a related field.

Experience: Seven (7) + years of Public or Media Relations, Communications, Journalism, or a combination of education and professional experience. Three (3) years managing routine publications. Three (3) years interaction with media. Responsibility for creating and implementing public relations strategic plan preferred.

Skills and Abilities: which may be representative but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position.

1. Exceptional oral and written communication skills.

2. Excellent relationship building skills.

3. Solid media relations experience and demonstrated news coverage placements.

4. Ability to complete multiple tasks and high volume of work on deadline.

5. Ability to follow through on assigned tasks with limited supervision.

6. Attention to detail and ability to edit and proofread.

7. Strong computer skills including the use of graphic design software, database management, word processing, spreadsheet, email and social media tools.

8. Openness to continuing learning and upgrading skills.

9. Solid grasp of evolving social media tools and concepts.

Transportation Requirement: Must possess a valid driver's license and automobile with insurance coverage as required by the State of Missouri.

FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Essential Functions:

1. In collaboration with the President and CEO and any designees, develop and implement a strategic communications plan with performance tracking measures to support the organization's mission, goals and objectives.

2. Guide the organization's communications in ways that promote a uniform and professional public image and brand in the community.

3. Write and edit news releases, print materials, fact sheets, articles that educate and publicize, talking points, flyers, online and social media content, program announcements, and the annual report; offer graphic design support in these processes; and oversee the monthly production of the Nightingale.

4. Oversee and maintain the organization's website.

5. Respond to media requests for interviews and information about the organization and its services; and facilitate media interviews with staff members, as approved by the President and CEO.

6. Create and maintain a database for public relations contacts in the community.

7. Except when otherwise directed by the Board Chairperson or the President/CEO, attend regularly-stated meetings of the Board of Directors and its committees; preview drafts of meeting minutes; and in collaboration with the President and CEO, help to ensure the content of the institution's official recorded documentation is written and presented accurately and effectively.

8. Build and foster collaborative relationships with other departments within the organization to stay informed of new and ongoing initiatives, programs, and services.

9. Build and foster working relationships with various publics, including the media.

10. Provide support to the Affinia Healthcare Foundation, including fundraising event support and the development of related materials, as requested.

11. Photograph various events and programs and/or ensure that activities are photographed by outside photographers in accordance with organizational needs and policies.

12. Assist to coordinate direct mail and direct marketing projects, when needed.

13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Marginal Functions: Build and maintain relationships with profession counterparts in other organizations, advocacy organization, and other community organizations through organizational initiatives and jointly-sponsored communication campaigns and programs.
