POSITION SUMMARY: To ensure the correct insurance information is in the practice management system before the patient is seen by verifying benefits and/or obtaining authorizations for commercial insurance patients.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience: Two (2) years experience as a medical billing clerk.

Skills and Abilities  

  1. Type 40 wpm and 10-key by touch.
  2. Microsoft Office applications, Windows and internet literate.
  3. Knowledge of commercial insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, self-pay after insurance, reimbursements, appeals, claims follow-up and third party billing.
  4. Medical terminology, ICD-9, ICD-10, CPT-4 and HCPCS
  5. Experience working with medical practice management and electronic health/medical records software, NextGen preferred.
  6. Ability to communicate well both verbally and written
  7. Detail oriented

 Essential Functions

  • Reviews patient's insurance and benefits ensuring all pre-certifications and referrals are in place for the date of the visit. Add notes to visit to be addressed at the Point of Service.  Generally work the date of the visit and 5 days out following up when necessary.
  • Work with billing staff and other departments to obtain supporting documentation to submit to payers to ensure timely payment for services, e.g. medical notes, consent forms, EOBs, etc.
  • Routinely communicate with payers and/or patients regarding delinquent or denied claims, addressing issues and clearing barriers to payment e.g. verifying patient eligibility, patient benefits, provider participation/ credentialing issues, etc.
  • Monitor and update the status of Medicaid applications.
  • Suggest billing component changes as necessary for payers
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
